AID-H-002.002: Inference-Time Prompt & Input Validation
Pillars: app
Lifecycle: operation
Scope boundary
Owns the synchronous preventive gate for live text, structured fields, tenant parameters, retrieved text, and prompt inputs before prompt assembly or model invocation, including normalization, schema and size bounds, injection policy, and admission outcome.
AID-H-002.003: AID-H-002.002 gates text and structured inference inputs; AID-H-002.003 safely decodes, normalizes, sanitizes, and admits complete non-realtime media and document artifacts. Extracted text may return to the text gate, but binary decoding and artifact rebuilding remain a separate boundary.
AID-H-002.008: AID-H-002.002 handles complete request fields available at inference ingress; AID-H-002.008 handles realtime audio, camera, call, and screen-share streams that require incremental decisions before a complete artifact exists. Streaming timing, frame, and turn semantics cannot be reduced to a one-shot prompt gate.
AID-D-001.001: AID-H-002.002 consumes detector and policy evidence and returns the sanitize, block, downgrade, review, or admission result; AID-D-001.001 analyzes prompt content, intent, and obfuscation and emits a finding. The synchronous enforcement decision remains distinct from the detector verdict.
AID-H-019.001: AID-H-002.002 validates the prompt and request fields supplied to inference; AID-H-019.001 normalizes and admits a remote URL before network fetching. A syntactically valid URL field is not proof that the destination is safe to resolve or fetch.
Implementation guidance
- AID-H-002.002-G001: Apply strict schema validation and bounds checking for all user inputs.
- AID-H-002.002-G002: Validate text under a field-specific normalization contract, preserving code and data semantics; bind optional obfuscation-analysis views to the admitted input.
- AID-H-002.002-G003: Sanitize prompts: strip/escape control tokens and known injection markers.
- AID-H-002.002-G004: Moderate with a guardrail model or API before invoking the primary LLM.
- AID-H-002.002-G005: Deploy a deterministic synchronous prompt gate at the API edge with fixed pre-model pipeline ordering.
- AID-H-002.002-G006: Sign, test, promote, hot-reload, and roll back the synchronous prompt-gate rule pack as a versioned release artifact.
- AID-H-002.002-G007: Safe prompt templating to separate trusted instructions from untrusted user input.
- AID-H-002.002-G008: Validate, safely fetch, and sanitize external/RAG sources before embedding or retrieval.
- AID-H-002.002-G009: Treat URL-prefilled prompts as external input and require a bound user action before submission without granting tool or memory authority.
AID-H-002.002-G001
Concept:
Enforce type/length/range via schema before inputs reach the model.

Action: Load every numeric bound, exact gateway URL, CA, and client identity from the separately verified versioned runtime profile. Stop chunked request bodies at the raw ASGI receive boundary after at most the signed cap plus one byte; then require mTLS to the exact HTTPS model gateway, deny redirects, stream at most the signed response cap plus one byte, and accept only strict duplicate-free {text} JSON.
Before you begin
Apply AID-H-002.002-G001 only when untrusted text, structured fields, retrieved content, URLs, or tenant-controlled parameters can reach an AI inference request.
Keep the action safely bounded
allow only this gate's sanitized representation and deny or quarantine the request when any field, dependency, or binding is missing.
AID-H-002.002-G002
Choose the admitted representation per field
Mixed prompts, code, configuration, identifiers, signatures, and quoted data default to exact preservation after decoding. Enable NFC only for a named text field whose contract permits canonical equivalence. Do not globally apply NFKC, confusable substitution, control-character removal, trimming, or whitespace collapse: these can change Python, YAML, Makefile rules, literals, and valid multilingual content. If the contract forbids a character, reject that field rather than silently rewriting it. Keep transport byte limits and encoding validation at ingress as well as the character cap below.
One representation for the model, the detector, and the human. The preserve profile deliberately keeps format characters (Unicode category Cf) in the admitted text, because stripping them breaks legitimate Arabic, Persian, Indic, and emoji content. That is exactly why the lossy detector view below must never be the only place invisible characters are handled: Unicode tag characters (U+E0000 to U+E007F), zero-width and word joiners, unpaired variation selectors, and bidi overrides can carry an instruction the model reads while a detector, a renderer, or an approving human sees nothing. The field contract therefore decides, per field and before prompt assembly, whether such characters are rejected or admitted, and a rejected field never reaches the model. Sinks that show admitted text to a person, including approval views under AID-M-006.001 and rendered output under AID-H-006.002, must show escaped code points for these characters rather than a stripped copy.

Classify format characters without breaking legitimate text
Do not strip every Cf character, and do not let a run count or an emoji-looking prefix stand in for the test. Classify each occurrence on its own against tables pinned to one Unicode data version: a ZWJ between two pictographs or between two letters of a joining script is normal; a tag sequence is valid only as U+1F3F4 followed by a subdivision spec that appears in the RGI emoji tag sequence list of that version and one terminating U+E007F, so a black flag carrying arbitrary tag letters, an unlisted code, or a second cancel is smuggling even though it is well formed; a variation selector is valid only directly after a base that can take that selector class (emoji-capable bases for U+FE0E/U+FE0F, standardized-variant bases for U+FE00 to U+FE0D, unified ideographs for U+E0100 to U+E01EF) and never stacked on another selector, which is what turns selectors into carrier bytes; a ZWJ between ASCII letters, an invisible operator inside a word, or a bidi override are not justified. Bidi isolates and marks are recorded but only rejected by fields that allow no format characters at all. Extend the script blocks from the languages the field actually declares; this module is a minimum, and Python exposes no script or Extended_Pictographic property, so the approximations are named as such.

The router chooses the field from the validated request schema. The model receives exactly the admitted representation that the gate checked. A detector may inspect an additional lossy view, but its finding must bind the admitted digest, analysis profile, and request-policy version; never substitute the analysis text into model input or tool execution. Reject or quarantine on a required analysis failure. This example does not claim to detect every obfuscation or make instructions in data trustworthy.

Add boundary-size, mixed-script, bidi, zero-width, combining-mark, flag-tag-sequence (listed and unlisted codes, encoded text behind a flag), stacked and misplaced variation-selector, and field-contract cases from actual supported input, and keep the legitimate-use fixtures for every language the field declares; a rule that rejects Persian ZWNJ or an emoji flag is a regression, not a stricter control. Prove with a test that a field rejected for format characters is never assembled into a prompt and that no sink displays a stripped copy of admitted text. Verify every ingress route uses the declared profile and that policy checks and model assembly bind the same admitted digest and policy version. A changed profile or Unicode dependency requires replay; a semantic change outside the field contract blocks release.
Action: Normalize only where the field contract permits it, preserve executable and mixed content, decide invisible and format characters per field before prompt assembly, and keep detector-only transformations separate from admitted input.

Production boundary: escape only renderer-reserved syntax
Do not claim that a regex can remove semantic prompt injection. This control neutralizes only exact protocol, template, or model-control delimiters that the local renderer declares as reserved. Ordinary phrases such as “ignore previous instructions” remain untrusted data and must be evaluated by the semantic guardrail guidance in this sub-technique. Prefer a provider's native typed message API over string concatenation.

Enforcement: Load the delimiter map only from a signature-verified policy bound to the exact prompt renderer/model template. Apply it to every untrusted string field after canonicalization and schema validation but before typed prompt assembly. The independent test suite injects every reserved token at every field boundary and proves that the final serialized request contains no raw reserved delimiter from untrusted input. A model change or template digest change invalidates the receipt.

Apply AID-H-002.002-G003 only when untrusted text, structured fields, retrieved content, URLs, or tenant-controlled parameters can reach an AI inference request.
Keep the action safely bounded
allow only this gate's sanitized representation and deny or quarantine the request when any field, dependency, or binding is missing.

Concept:
Make moderation a fail-closed gate with one authenticated contract: return a policy-versioned allow/deny decision bound to this request before the primary model sees the prompt. Exercise flagged and unflagged prompts plus missing or non-boolean flagged, duplicate/extra fields, wrong request or policy version, malformed or oversized JSON, TLS/client-certificate failure, redirect, timeout, retry exhaustion, and moderation-service error. Use an LLM test double and assert its call count remains zero for every negative fixture. Reconcile the deployed inference-route inventory with moderation audit records by request ID and policy version; any route that can dispatch without a matching allow decision blocks release.
Action: Put moderation immediately before model dispatch and fail closed on dependency or contract failure. Log request ID, policy version, decision, latency, and reason without prompt contents or bearer credentials. If product policy allows a fallback path, make it a separately audited low-risk flow rather than silently bypassing moderation.

Action: deploy one immutable deterministic edge gate with one ordered pre-model path, and promote it only after the signed build receipt and independent live readback both pass.
Before you begin
Apply AID-H-002.002-G005 only when untrusted text, structured fields, retrieved content, URLs, or tenant-controlled parameters can reach an AI inference request.
Keep the action safely bounded
allow only this gate's sanitized representation and deny or quarantine the request when any field, dependency, or binding is missing.
AID-H-002.002-G006
Package rules independently from requests
Store rule IDs, descriptions, exact patterns or keyword sets, severity, action, test fixtures, schema version, and minimum compatible gate version in canonical JSON. Reject unbounded regular expressions and caller-supplied rules. Sign the rule pack with the CI release identity, validate it against the schema, run negative, benign, Unicode, size, and regex-timeout tests, and bind the pack digest to the immutable gateway image or approved external policy revision.
Reload without an unverified interval
The gateway downloads only from a pinned control-plane endpoint, verifies signature, digest, monotonic version, compatibility, and expiry into a new in-memory instance, then atomically swaps active generations. In-flight requests keep the prior generation; failed verification leaves the last verified pack active and emits an error. A read-only verifier queries every gateway replica for active pack digest and replays the signed test corpus. Retain promotion, activation, replica-readback, rollback, and replay receipts.
Before you begin
Admission must inject H002_RULE_PACK_VERIFY_TIMEOUT_SECONDS from the verified deployment profile; a missing, non-numeric, non-finite, or non-positive value is a startup error.

AID-H-002.002-G007
Concept:
Prompt templating should make the trust boundary explicit: immutable system instructions stay in one bounded wrapper, and untrusted user data is inserted only into a data slot after contract checks pass. Prefer message objects over ad hoc string concatenation when the client supports them.
Step 1: Build one prompt templater with contract checks
# File: llm_guards/prompt_templating.py
from __future__ import annotations

from dataclasses import dataclass

raise ValueError(f"user_input exceeds {MAX_USER_INPUT_CHARS} characters")
return [
{"role": "system", "content": SYSTEM_PRELUDE},
{"role": "user", "content": cleaned},
]
Step 2: Invoke the templater at the LLM client wrapper
# File: llm_client.py
from llm_guards.prompt_templating import PromptTemplater
templater = PromptTemplater()
def call_llm(user_input: str, *, llm_client):
messages = templater.build_messages(user_input)
return llm_client.generate(messages=messages)
Step 3: Verify role separation and wrapper coverage
# File: tests/test_prompt_templating.py

import pytest

Run these fixtures plus Unicode, multiline, delimiter-like, serialized message, and maximum-length cases whenever the template or client SDK changes. Inventory every deployed chat/completion entry point and send a canary through each one; capture the exact message-role sequence and system-prelude digest at the client boundary and require complete equality with the reviewed template. A route that concatenates strings, accepts caller-supplied roles, mutates the system message, or bypasses the wrapper blocks release. Role separation limits data/control confusion but does not by itself make prompt injection harmless; instruction-hierarchy defenses under AID-H-016 remain separate.
Action: Keep the system prelude immutable, versioned, and separately reviewed. Treat every user-controlled field as data, reject empty or oversized payloads, and call the templater at every chat-completion entry point instead of assembling prompts inline.

Persist the raw/canonical/final URL digests, exact returned-body digest, exact sanitized UTF-8 output digest, policy and service-image identity, and both signed receipt IDs. Chunking and embedding are downstream operations and must retain their own input/output evidence.

}Verification, outcomes, and complete-population evidence
The client validates each policy-supplied endpoint as canonical HTTPS, denies redirects, uses an SSL context with its client certificate loaded, and streams at most the signed envelope cap plus one decoded byte before parsing. It accepts only exact v2 fields and types, lowercase SHA-256 values, the configured policy version/digest and immutable service-image digest, bounded redirect/body counts, the expected HTTP-status/outcome pair, and outcome-specific nullability. It never calls raise_for_status() before parsing a structured FAIL/ERROR. Before any bytes are decoded, it reads the receipt back through a separately authenticated audit endpoint, requires a verified signature, exact caller identity, exact decision schema, and field-for-field equality with the envelope. Every PASS, FAIL, and ERROR attempt also receives a signed consumer-event receipt; safe-fetch transport failure or an empty audit-outage 503 is recorded as consumer ERROR and releases no body.
Action: Give the ingestion workload network access only to the canonical H-019 service and the two authenticated audit endpoints. Preserve the digest of the exact bytes returned by safe fetch and the digest of the exact sanitized UTF-8 output actually produced. Do not claim that chunking or embedding occurred until those downstream stages retain and independently verify their own evidence.
AID-H-002.002-G009
Step 1: Separate navigation, drafting, and execution
Route assistant deep links such as ?q= and ?prompt= through a controlled prefill endpoint. GET/HEAD navigation, link previews, browser prefetch, and redirects must never invoke the model or a tool. Render the original decoded text as text content in an editable draft labeled as externally supplied. Disable automatic submission at the application default; a submit=false parameter that the link author can remove is not an enforcement control. Some deployed assistants support URL-triggered submission, as documented for Open WebUI URL parameters. Keep code-point visibility and field-specific normalization from AID-H-002.002-G002; do not delete phrases such as “remember” to manufacture a safe prompt.
Step 2: Derive origin at the trusted boundary
Use distinct server routes for external drafts and intentional user submissions. Ignore caller-supplied prompt_origin, role, trust, tool, and memory-permission fields. The server stores the draft under the authenticated tenant/user, and returns an opaque draft ID. The browser shows the exact stored bytes before an explicit submit action. Same-origin/CSRF checks and Fetch Metadata rejection of cross-site automatic submissions are defense in depth; missing Sec-Fetch-Site is not evidence of human authorship. If the application cannot distinguish a route's source, classify it as unknown/external, not human_input. A pasted prompt is not cryptographic proof of authorship either.
// link-prefill.mjs -- Node.js 22+, controlled ingress adapter
import { createHash, randomUUID, timingSafeEqual } from 'node:crypto';

&& timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(a), Buffer.from(b));

const url = new URL(requestUrl, policy.assistant_origin);
if (url.origin !== policy.assistant_origin || url.pathname !== '/link-prefill')
throw new Error('invalid ingress route');
const values = [...url.searchParams.getAll('q'), ...url.searchParams.getAll('prompt')];
if (values.length !== 1 || Buffer.byteLength(values[0], 'utf8') > policy.max_prompt_bytes)
throw new Error('missing, duplicate, or oversized prompt');
// URLSearchParams decodes once. Never recursively unquote into a new command.
return Object.freeze({id: randomUUID(), tenant_id: session.tenant_id,
user_id: session.user_id, text: values[0], text_sha256: digest(values[0]),

|| !equal(request.csrf, session.csrf)
|| request.draft_id !== draft.id
|| session.tenant_id !== draft.tenant_id || session.user_id !== draft.user_id
|| draft.policy_version !== policy.version || now >= draft.expires_at
|| now < draft.created_at || digest(draft.text) !== draft.text_sha256)
throw new Error('confirmation binding failed');
return Object.freeze({draft_id: draft.id, tenant_id: draft.tenant_id,
user_id: draft.user_id, text_sha256: draft.text_sha256,
prompt_origin: 'link_prefill', confirmation_kind: 'submit_prompt',
policy_version: policy.version, confirmed_at: now});
}Step 3: Commit a narrow confirmation
The HTTP receiver obtains the session from authenticated middleware, validates a strict body schema containing only draft_id and csrf, and loads the draft from a server-only store. Persist confirmation and consume the draft atomically with run creation; concurrent confirmations must not create duplicate runs. Editing the text creates a new stored revision/digest requiring redisplay. Sign or immutably reference the resulting receipt before downstream use. Configure an exact trusted assistant origin and positive byte/TTL limits in the versioned deployment policy. The sample functions are ingress transforms, not a substitute for session authentication, the durable transaction, or the existing prompt gate.
Keep link_prefill in ancestry after confirmation. Confirming “send this prompt” grants neither memory writes nor sensitive reads, exports, or other tool calls. AID-H-029.002 mediates memory changes and AID-H-018.004 issues capabilities for an independently authorized task. AID-H-018.003 still owns high-impact action approval. Keep these constraints until the relevant authority is obtained, across turns and relays; do not relax them just because the first turn has ended.
Step 4: Exercise the real UI and backend
Test an external link containing a memory directive, a mailbox-read request, encoded control characters, duplicate query parameters, and a tool-enable parameter. Opening or previewing it must cause zero inference, memory, and tool calls. Test direct POST bypass, another user's draft, altered text, expired confirmation, and two concurrent submits. Legitimate displayed-and-confirmed text must enter the ordinary input gate unchanged. Log IDs and digests rather than raw URL prompts.
