AID-H-024.004: Approved Tool Contract Semantics & Change Admission

Version 1.20261015 · Actionable sub-technique

At onboarding and every descriptor or schema change, normalize meaning-bearing contract fields and enforce invariants over operation semantics, side effects, privilege scope, and destructive behavior. Bind the semantic-profile digest to a signed expiring approval and keep the tool unresolved when it is not approved.

Pillars: app

Lifecycle: building, operation

Scope boundary

Owns admission and change review of meaning-bearing tool-contract fields, including declared operation, side effects, privilege scope, and destructive behavior. It binds approved semantics to the exact descriptor but does not authorize a particular invocation.

AID-H-024.002: AID-H-024.004 approves contract meaning; AID-H-024.002 verifies that the resolved descriptor bytes have not drifted from the approved content. Semantic approval without byte binding is mutable, while byte binding without semantic review can preserve a dangerous contract.

AID-H-034.003: AID-H-024.004 approves what a tool claims it can do before use; AID-H-034.003 validates and authorizes each request inside the MCP server handler. An approved contract never pre-authorizes a caller, object, argument, or backend effect.

Implementation guidance

AID-H-024.004-G001

Encode semantic invariants as policy-as-code checks over a normalized tool-contract profile and block onboarding or schema changes that violate approved action meaning.

Run this control at initial tool onboarding and whenever a descriptor, schema, transport action, side-effect declaration, or privilege scope changes. The policy directory must be an immutable, signature-verified bundle whose digest and version are supplied by the trusted policy loader; successful bundle verification is dependency evidence, not the semantic verdict.

Action: Make the evaluator a mandatory onboarding and descriptor-change gate. The command selects aidefend.tool_contract explicitly, and the JSON receipt must name that namespace, use the expected deny query for every finding, and account for exactly the three intended tests. A missing namespace, skipped policy, malformed report, inconsistent exit code, timeout, or report readback failure is ERROR, never PASS.

AID-H-024.004-G002

Bind the exact approved descriptor, semantic profile, invariant policy, and declared action boundary to a signed approval; require re-admission whenever any binding changes.

Use an approval record for every tool contract that has passed the invariant gate. The record is an independently signed artifact: the approval loader verifies exact bytes, signer identities, organizational quorum policy, and signature bundle before returning a VerifiedApproval. This guidance does not re-implement ordinary per-call schema validation from AID-H-018.001; it only checks that a high-risk invocation stays inside the approved semantic boundary.

Review every model-visible description before approval

The invariant gate in AID-H-024.004-G001 judges structured fields. The text a tool exposes to the model is a second, separately dangerous surface: the description, parameter descriptions, titles, enum and default values (including every string nested inside object- or array-valued default, const, examples, and enum entries at any depth, and the keys of such objects), and any unrecognized string inside the schema are all forwarded into the model context by ordinary clients, and a poisoned description can instruct the model to read files, call other tools, or hide its actions from the user. Byte binding under AID-H-024.002 preserves such text exactly; it does not judge it. Collect every forwardable string with its descriptor path, compute deterministic review triggers, and require a signed review receipt that binds the exact text digest before an approval can be issued. The triggers route text to a reviewer; they never approve on their own, and a descriptor with no receipt stays unresolved.

Prove the collector sees nested content: the same instruction placed as a plain default, inside an object-valued default, inside an examples object, or as an object key must produce the same trigger and change the text digest.

Persist the text digest, the trigger list, and the receipt: the reviewer signs tool_fqid, descriptor_sha256, model_visible_text_sha256, triggers_sha256, the decision, the review method (independent human, rule set, or model-assisted with a named human deciding), and the reviewer identities, using the same verified-loader pattern as the approval record. Any change to a model-visible string produces a new digest and therefore a new review. A rule or model may pre-classify; it may not be the reviewer of record for a tool that can mutate state or reach other tools.

Re-approval triggers and evidence

Require a new signed approval whenever the descriptor digest, normalized semantic profile, invariant policy, any model-visible text, side-effect category, tenant scope, destructive behavior, signer quorum policy, or expiry changes. Retain the signed record and bundle, signer/quorum verification receipt, local comparison receipt, and the exact normalized profile from the invariant gate. Independently replay approval verification and compare the dispatcher readback with the approved tool and semantic-profile digests.

Action: Block onboarding and resolution unless the signed, unexpired approval record binds the exact tool, descriptor, semantic profile, invariant policy, reviewed model-visible text, and approved boundary. Never treat an unsigned JSON record or an upstream signature PASS as the local approval decision.
